Atari is making waves once again, echoing the unexpected move from last year with the launch of a new console: the Atari 7800+. The once-prominent gaming brand has been focused on revitalizing its status in the gaming industry over the past few years. This has involved acquiring various studios, particularly those that previously held popular intellectual properties that have since faded from memory. Additionally, they introduced the Atari 2600+ console last year, a contemporary iteration of their iconic hardware. Earlier this morning, speculation arose about a potential exciting announcement during tonight's ONL at Gamescom, but Atari chose to reveal their surprise ahead of time.
In collaboration with Plaion, Atari is set to release the Atari 7800+, a fresh take on the classic 1986 Atari 7800 model. This updated version brings along some modern amenities, such as HDMI connectivity and USB power. However, it also aims to remain true to the essence of the original model. This means that not only will new game cartridges designed for this console be available, but users will also have the ability to use their previously owned 2600 and 7800 cartridges seamlessly with this new device.
Scheduled to launch on 29 November 2024, the Atari 7800+ can already be pre-ordered for 119.99 euros. On the same day, six game cartridges will accompany the console’s release, providing a mix of nostalgia and new experiences for gamers old and new.
In addition to the Atari 7800+, fresh cartridges for the Atari 2600+ will also be available on release day, ensuring that players have plenty of new content to enjoy alongside their classic favorites.
